I’m sure you’ve heard about Brazil. Maybe you’ve heard it’s unsafe, just about Carnaval, too big to explore, and that nobody speaks English.
I just spent two weeks traveling in this amazing country for the first time, and only one of the previous four holds true – it is way too big for just a 2-week trip! Wow. To be honest, I had no idea the depths of this place.
Latin America is such an interesting and complete part of the world to travel, and Brazil might take the cake with its complex landscapes and warm culture.
Is Brazil Really What You Think It Is?
Brazil is a HUGE country. It is half the size of the entire continent of South America. Before my trip there, I thought I knew what Brazil was all about. And wow, was I wrong! I did not expect to be blown away by the vast differences in the regions and by the fact that you can take multiple trips here and not come close to seeing everything these regions of Brazil has to offer.
I learned so many things in my short time here, but my biggest takeaway was that it’s a country that can (and should) be experienced many times over.
How that benefits you as a traveler with us – I made dozens of incredible connections in the tourism industry that make it their job to share what travel to Brazil is all about. Working with us at Explore the Americas gives you access to all of these contacts ensuring your Brazil vacation is more than you ever expected.
The 5 Regions of Brazil
(Yes, this means you will need to visit at least 5 times)
🏞️ 1. The Central-West (Centro-Oeste)
Includes: Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Goiás, Distrito Federal (Brasília)
Why go here: This is where you go if nature & wildlife are the focus of your trip.
What to expect: Safaris (yes, just like those you might be familiar with in Africa) and vast landscapes.
- Pantanal: The world’s largest wetlands, and contrary to popular belief, easier than the Amazon to spot wildlife (think jaguars, caimans, capybaras, macaws, giant anteaters). Brazil has it’s own Big 5, and this is where you are most likely to spot them all!
- Brasilia: The capital of Brazil with a ton of history. This city was created to be a capital city so everything flows so seamlessly, and the futuristic architecture is something you shouldn’t miss.
- Chapada dos Veadeiros & Chapada dos Guimarães: Waterfalls, spiritual energy, and stunning plateaus here. If you’re into unexplained phenomena, this is one of the few places in the world known for UFO spottings.

⛰️ 2. The South (Sul)
Includes: Paraná, Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul
Why go here: Cooler weather, mountain scenery, and some European influence. Not your typical Brazil and the perfect mix of nature, culture, and great food & wine!
What to expect: Good food, wine, and outdoor time! Brazil mixed with some European flavor!
- Paraná: Iguazu Falls – a natural wonder you can’t miss in this region.
- Santa Catarina: Florianopolis is the highlight city here. Surfing, relaxing, beach clubs and island lifestyle is what you get here.
- Rio Grande do Sul: Wine country and gauchos galore. This place is the heart of culture in this region!

🇧🇷 3. The Southeast (Sudeste)
Includes: Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Minas Gerais
Why go here: This is the cultural, financial, and creative heart of Brazil.
What to expect: World famous beaches (think Copacobana & Ipanema), and energy and elegance combined with culture & history.
- Rio de Janeiro: Incredible views, lively streets, run clubs jogging along the Copacabana at sunrise, and unmatched energy. Do Christ the Redeemer & Sugarloaf mountain ring a bell?
- São Paulo: The largest city in the Americas with 22 million people (yes, bigger than Mexico City!), known for art, nightlife, gastronomy & culture!
- Minas Gerais: Full of charming towns that take you back in time, right in the middle of mountains & waterfalls.

🌴 4. The Northeast (Nordeste)
Includes: Bahia, Pernambuco, Ceará, Maranhão, Alagoas, and more
Why go here: Beaches & Afro-Brazilian culture
What to expect: Learning about Indigenous culture and traditions surrounded by the warm people & equally as wam climate.
- Bahia: Where you’ll find Salvador, a soulful beach town known for its cuisine, music, & African influence.
- Pernambuco: Known for Carnaval festivities, tropical beaches & islands & colonial feel. And of course, Fernando do Noronha for some of the best scuba diving in South America.
- Ceará: Hundreds of miles of coastline and beautiful beaches.
- Maranhão: If you have seen pictures of insane white dunes and blue lagoons in Brazil, it was in Maranhão.

🌳 5. The North (Norte)
Includes: Amazonas, Pará, Tocatins, Acre, Roraima, and more
Why go here: To experience the Amazon rainforest – Earth’s lungs and one of the most biodiverse region’s on the planet. Need we say more?
What to expect: Remoteness, simplicity, and nature in its rawest form. So few places like this still exist in our world as we know it today.
- Amazonas: You’ll need to start in Manaus, the door to the Amazon, where you can embark on a river cruise to experience the dense Amazon jungle, cruising the Amazon river, pink dolphins, and disconnecting in its purest form.
- Pará: Markets, history, & culture in this state that is home to the Amazon rainforest.
- Tocatins: Expect rugged adventures, natural pools, beautiful beaches, and eco-lodges in the middle of nowhere!
