Our Personal Connection to Costa Rica’s Nicoya Peninsula

I (Melanie) have been visiting Costa Rica’s Nicoya Peninsula for as long as I can remember. My grandfather, originally from Florida, moved here in the 1970s and built farms across the country, including one right in Nicoya. It quickly became our go-to spot for family trips in the summer, and some of my favorite childhood memories were made here.
Kathleen’s story is a bit different. While studying in San José, she jumped at the chance to move to the coast, settling in the laid-back beach town of Santa Teresa. After living and teaching Biology there for two years, she developed deep ties to the community and has had a front-row seat to just how much the area has changed in the past 10 years.
