Will visiting a Blue Zone help you live longer?

Our Personal Connection to Costa Rica’s Nicoya Peninsula

A vintage childhood photo of a young girl in a striped swimsuit holding a pink parasol on a grassy lawn, with palm trees and a blue bay behind her on Costa Rica's Nicoya Peninsula.

I (Melanie) have been visiting Costa Rica’s Nicoya Peninsula for as long as I can remember. My grandfather, originally from Florida, moved here in the 1970s and built farms across the country, including one right in Nicoya. It quickly became our go-to spot for family trips in the summer, and some of my favorite childhood memories were made here.

Kathleen’s story is a bit different. While studying in San José, she jumped at the chance to move to the coast, settling in the laid-back beach town of Santa Teresa. After living and teaching Biology there for two years, she developed deep ties to the community and has had a front-row seat to just how much the area has changed in the past 10 years.

This region holds a special place in our hearts, and it’s no surprise why. Nicoya Peninsula is one of only five Blue Zones in the world: rare regions where people live longer, healthier lives thanks to a unique blend of lifestyle, community, and environment.

What Is a Blue Zone?

A Blue Zone is a special region where people live significantly longer and healthier lives than average. In places like the Nicoya Peninsula, locals often reach 100 years old with fewer chronic illnesses. It could be the sunshine, the ocean breeze, or the slow, easy pace of life, but days here are filled with fresh food, simple homemade meals, and plenty of time outdoors, and we think that has a lot to do with it.

The five recognized Blue Zones in the world are: Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica, Okinawa, Japan, Sardinia, Italy, Ikaria, Greece and Loma Linda, California.

Why Does Nicoya Matter?

What makes Nicoya locals some of the longest-lived people on Earth? It’s their everyday habits, many of which you can experience on your trip.

Their mostly plant-based diet features locally grown corn, beans, tropical fruits, and fresh fish. Dan Buettner’s The Blue Zones shows that fiber and antioxidant-rich foods like these support longevity and good health. You can join cooking classes or enjoy fresh farm-to-table meals to taste this for yourself.

Staying active is part of daily life. Simple things like walking to town, hiking, paddleboarding, or exploring beaches. The National Geographic Blue Zones Project highlights this natural movement as key to a long, healthy life.

Community is essential too. Strong family ties and close neighborhoods provide support that boosts mental and physical health. You’ll immediately feel this energy from the locals, the true pura vida spirit.

Having a purpose that motivates people every day. On your trip, reflecting, goal-setting, or trying yoga can help you tap into this energy, as noted by Harvard Health.

Finally, Nicoya’s warm climate, abundant sunshine, and slow pace reduce stress and promote well-being.

Can You Benefit as a Visitor?

While a short trip can’t magically add years to your life, and you may not be packing up to move here, spending time in a Blue Zone can inspire healthier habits and shift your perspective. There is so much to learn and take home with you!

Immersion travel, like eating the local diet, joining community events, hiking scenic trails, and unplugging from screens, helps you slow down and reconnect.

This “vacation reset” effect shows how even brief stays in healthy, natural environments can reduce stress and boost your overall well-being.
