Why Honduras

Honduras at a glance
Everything you need to know before you start planning.
When to travel
The dry season is the classic window. February brings the year’s best underwater visibility.
February through April is the sweet spot: dry skies, the year’s best reef visibility off Roatán and Utila, and Copán at its clearest. May through November is greener and wetter on the mainland (heaviest September–October), but the Bay Islands stay divable all year, with whale sharks off Utila around March–April and August–September.

"Great experience working with ETA. I was overwhelmed before planning my trip because I was traveling with five people, so coordinating travel, accommodations, car rental, and activities for a group was challenging. After my call with them I felt much more confident, and they were super helpful with booking my car — they got me a rate better than what I would have found on my own!"
Common questions
The questions our planners hear every week. If yours isn't here, a 15-minute call is the fastest way to a real answer.
Divers, culture seekers, and anyone who wants a destination that still feels undiscovered. The Bay Islands are world-class for reef diving and snorkeling, Copán is one of the great Mayan sites with almost none of the crowds, and the country as a whole has a raw, unpolished quality that experienced travelers tend to love. If you are looking for somewhere that over-delivers and under-charges, Honduras belongs on your list.
February through April is the sweet spot in Honduras: dry weather and the year's best underwater visibility on the Bay Islands. Diving is good year-round, and whale sharks pass Utila roughly March–April and August–September. May through November is greener and wetter on the mainland, with the heaviest rain in September and October.
Yes. Utila, in Honduras's Bay Islands, is one of the few places on Earth with whale sharks recorded year-round, and the most reliable windows are roughly March–April and August–September. These gentle giants are protected, so encounters are snorkel-only - so no scuba diving. Keep in mind, from a Roatán base, we can also arrange a day trip to Utila when the season lines up!
Yes, and it is hard to think of many places that do it better. Roatán and its neighbor Utila are two of the most popular learn-to-dive destinations in the world, combining ideal conditions with experienced instruction and some of the most spectacular reef in the Western Hemisphere. The water is warm and clear year-round, currents are manageable for beginners, and the reef gives you something genuinely worth seeing from your very first dive. Utila tends to draw a younger, more budget-conscious crowd while Roatán offers a wider range of experiences and accommodation, but both deliver on the diving.
For the destinations we focus on, yes. The Bay Islands and Copán are safe, well-traveled, and welcoming. Honduras as a whole has a more complicated picture, and we are always honest with clients about that. What we can say is that we only send people to places we have experienced ourselves, and every itinerary we build comes with vetted local guides who know the terrain. That local knowledge makes all the difference.
