Why Belize

Belize at a glance
Everything you need to know before you start planning.
When to travel
For diving and reef visibility, April–June is the sweet spot: calm seas, low rain, fewer crowds than peak. December–March means perfect weather and peak prices. We avoid September–October for hurricane risk on the cayes.

"Great experience working with ETA. I was overwhelmed before planning my trip because I was traveling with five people, so coordinating travel, accommodations, car rental, and activities for a group was challenging. After my call with them I felt much more confident, and they were super helpful with booking my car — they got me a rate better than what I would have found on my own!"
Common questions
The questions our planners hear every week. If yours isn't here, a 15-minute call is the fastest way to a real answer.
Belize is one of our favorite family destinations in Central America. It's the region's only English-speaking country, flights from the U.S. are easy, and the mix of wildlife, beaches, snorkeling, and adventure works for a wide range of ages. Kids can snorkel with nurse sharks and stingrays, explore caves, float down jungle rivers, and visit ancient Maya ruins all in the same trip.
April through June is the sweet spot for diving Belize: calm seas, the clearest underwater visibility of the year, and lighter crowds than the December–April peak. This is the prime window for the Great Blue Hole and the offshore atolls like Lighthouse Reef and Turneffe (but tbh - The Blue Hole isn't our go-to diving spot). We avoid September and October, the peak hurricane months on the cayes.
No, Belize is one of the best snorkeling destinations on the planet, no certification required. Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Shark Ray Alley off Ambergris Caye deliver nurse sharks, stingrays, turtles, and 160-plus recorded fish species in clear, shallow water. The Great Blue Hole is the marquee dive, but we design plenty of snorkel-only Belize trips around the barrier reef.
Do both, Belize's magic is the contrast. The cayes and atolls (Ambergris Caye, Placencia, private islands) are for the barrier reef, snorkeling, and easy island days; the Cayo and Maya Mountains inland deliver waterfalls, ziplines, river tubing, cacao and rum tours, and Maya ruins. Our itineraries pair a jungle lodge with reef time, trading dense rainforest for turquoise water in a single trip.
Xunantunich and Caracol are Belize's standout Maya sites, both in the Cayo District near the jungle lodges we use. From Cayo, you can also cross into Guatemala to see Tikal.
Yes, Belize pairs naturally with its neighbors. Mexico's Yucatan sits right across the northern border, so hop down from Tulum and Bacalar to the barrier reef. Guatemala is also the classic add-on, and from the Cayo lodges it's a short cross-border hop to Tikal's jungle temples, exactly the route our Belize + Tikal itinerary follows.
Absolutely. We love Belize for honeymooners who want the laid-back Caribbean island vibe but also want a little adventure mixed in. In a single trip, you can spend your days snorkeling or diving the reef, relaxing on a private island, exploring Maya ruins, spotting wildlife in the jungle, or floating through caves. It's a great fit for couples who want beautiful beaches and downtime without spending their entire honeymoon at a resort.
The biggest mistake in Belize is booking the Great Blue Hole expecting the colorful reef from the postcards. That famous deep-navy circle is an aerial view, and underwater it's a 130-foot advanced dive past anoxic depths where marine life is sparse and the payoff is geological, not coral. Save the vivid fish and turtles for Hol Chan and the barrier reef off Ambergris Caye. We match divers to the right site so the Blue Hole thrills rather than disappoints.
