Custom travel planning to Ecuador

Colonial Quito, the Andes' volcano alley, the Amazon basin, and the Galápagos: four worlds in one passport stamp.

Why Ecuador

Four ecosystems in one small country.

  • The Galápagos, on Ecuador's doorstep. A 2-hour flight from Quito or Guayaquil. We pair islands with mainland time. Most travelers regret cutting either short.
  • Highest biodiversity per square km. Ecuador is one of 17 megadiverse countries, and the densest. 1,600+ bird species on the mainland alone, plus 38 endemic to the Galápagos.
  • Quito's UNESCO old town. One of the largest, best-preserved colonial centers in Latin America: narrow lanes, gilded churches, and a 9,350-ft altitude that asks for a slow first day.
  • Volcano Alley, drive-able. Cotopaxi, Chimborazo, Tungurahua: a corridor of snow-capped volcanoes connecting the highlands to the Amazon. Hot-spring lodges and hacienda stays anchor it.
  • Dollarized economy, easy to plan. Ecuador uses the US dollar as its official currency: no exchange friction, transparent pricing, simpler tipping.

June–September is the prime mainland window: dry Andes, navigable Amazon, cool clear nights. The Galápagos splits into a warm/wet season (Dec–May, calmer seas, snorkeling visibility, mating season) and a dry/cool season (Jun–Nov, choppier water, peak wildlife activity, Humboldt currents). May and October are the soft shoulders: fewer boats, quieter Otavalo markets.

Festivals worth planning around

"The most awesome anniversary trip!! Thanks to Melanie, Kathleen, and team, our adventures were amazing — sunset sailing, ATV riding, a rainforest night hike, and more. The highlight was the boutique hotel recommendations — we loved Amor! Service and food quality were outstanding. First time we used a travel planner and it won't be the last. I loved how easy it was to tell them what we wanted, our budget, and timeframe — everything was seamless. Thank you for all the priceless memories!"

Common questions

Ecuador, answered.

The questions our planners hear every week. If yours isn't here, a 15-minute call is the fastest way to a real answer.

Why should I visit mainland Ecuador?

Ecuador offers an incredible amount of diversity in a compact, easy-to-explore country. In a single trip, you can wander colonial cities, hike beneath snow-capped volcanoes, explore Indigenous markets, search for wildlife in the Amazon rainforest, relax in the cloud forest, and, if desired, continue on to the Galápagos. Few countries offer so much variety with so little travel time between destinations.

One of our favorite experiences is a stay at Hacienda Zuleta, a historic working hacienda known for its horseback riding, condor conservation program, and stunning mountain scenery.

When is the best time to visit Ecuador?

Year-round! Because Ecuador includes the Andes, Amazon, cloud forest, coast, and Galápagos, the ideal timing depends on which regions you plan to visit.

How does the altitude in Quito affect travelers?

Quito sits at 9,350 feet, so most travelers feel mild effects on arrival in Ecuador: slight breathlessness and a possible headache the first afternoon. Hydrate, go easy on alcohol the first day, and don't overschedule. We start every trip here slow!

Can I combine the Andes, Amazon, and Galápagos in one Ecuador trip?

Yes, but it depends on how much time you have. One of Ecuador's greatest strengths is the incredible diversity packed into a relatively small country. In a single trip, you can explore the Andes, venture into the Amazon rainforest, and visit the Galápagos, all connected by short domestic flights rather than long travel days. For travelers with 10–14+ days, we can create a bucket list itinerary combining multiple regions. If your time is more limited, we usually recommend focusing on two regions and exploring them more deeply rather than trying to see everything.

Is mainland Ecuador worth visiting if I'm already going to the Galápagos?

YES! We feel that many travelers think of Ecuador only as the gateway to the Galápagos, or dismiss it because of outdated perceptions about safety. In reality, it's one of South America's most rewarding and underrated destinations. You can spend the night at a 17th-century working hacienda where you can horseback ride through the Andes and visit a condor conservation project. You can explore Indigenous markets in Otavalo, hike beneath Cotopaxi Volcano, or venture into the Amazon rainforest in search of monkeys, macaws, and pink river dolphins. If you have even 3–5 extra days, we think mainland Ecuador is absolutely worth it.
