Hey everyone! This week’s blog post features guest author Nicole Brose from Guayabo Animal Rescue & Sanctuary. It’s a mission we think is really cool and a meaningful example of how tourism in Costa Rica can support local conservation efforts. We hope you enjoy the read!

Travel With Purpose

When you decide to take a vacation, you’re not just choosing where to relax — you’re choosing what your money supports. In today’s world, where tourism can either uplift or harm the places we visit, making intentional choices matters more than ever. At Guayabo Animal Rescue & Sanctuary in Costa Rica, we believe travel should give back — not just to you as the traveler, but to the land, people, and animals that make your destination unforgettable.

So, the next time you plan a trip abroad, ask yourself: What if my vacation could help save lives, preserve nature, and support local families?

That’s the magic of ecotourism. And that’s exactly what we offer here at Guayabo Animal Rescue & Sanctuary.

A Sanctuary in the Hills of Guanacaste

Nestled in the breathtaking hills near Miravalles Volcano, our sanctuary sits on 300 lush acres in the Guanacaste province of Costa Rica. Yes, we’re a paradise — complete with mountain breezes, wild hiking trails, and wraparound views of untouched nature. But what makes this place truly special is the purpose behind it.

More Than a Rescue — A Mission

We’re a nonprofit rescue and sanctuary that provides permanent homes for neglected animals — from dogs and goats to horses and cows — while also running spay and neuter clinics, educational programs, and community outreach to improve the lives of both animals and people. Every villa stay, every horseback ride, and every visit to our rescue directly supports this mission.

That means your dollars go further here. They don’t line the pockets of a chain hotel or mega resort — they provide food for a rescue horse, veterinary care for a street dog, or job opportunities for someone in our local village.

Stay Somewhere That Matters

We’re proud to offer lodging that’s both beautiful and meaningful. Our villas are spacious, thoughtfully designed, and surrounded by nature. Guests are welcome to interact with our rescue animals, book adventures like horseback or ATV rides, or simply take a deep breath and reconnect to what really matters. You’ll leave with more than a tan — you’ll leave with a story that matters.

Supporting the Next Generation

And here’s something else: your visit supports education, too. Local children come to the sanctuary to learn about animal care, empathy, and environmental conservation. Your stay helps fund those programs — helping raise a generation that will cherish and protect their homeland.

Travel That Gives Back

Travel has power. It can consume or it can contribute. It can exploit, or it can uplift.

When you choose an ecotourism destination like Guayabo Animal Rescue & Sanctuary, you’re choosing the latter — a life-changing experience that supports sustainability, community resilience, and compassion.

So, when you plan your next adventure abroad, don’t just look for a place to stay. Look for a place that aligns with your values. A place that gives back. A place like this.

Come for the view. Stay for the impact.

Warmly yours,

Nicole Brose, Executive Director, Guayabo Animal Rescue & Sanctuary
